Shifting from Tiruvengadu to Mayuram

Finally in the 1930’s, Pillai decided to shift base from Tiruvengadu to Mayavaram. It became more or less a necessity owing to the latter place being a larger town with better travel and communication facilities. For many years he lived in a house on Iyarrappan East Street. In 1947 he built a large and comfortable residence next to it and named “Nadha Mahal”. Pillai arranged a concert by GN Balasubramaniam on the occasion of its Grahapravesam (house warming ceremony). GNB’s accompanists on that day were T Chowdiah (violin) and Palghat Mani Iyer (Mridangam). “Nadha Mahal” became the first house in that area to get electricity and it was also the first residence in Mayavaram to get a telephone connection. In keeping with the firsts of the house, its owner also became one of the first nadhaswara artistes to own a car, possessing successively a Pontiac, an Oldsmobile, an Austin, a Morris Minor, a Dodge and a Vauxhall. His faithful chauffeur, Madalamuthu, drove all the cars, who after retirement, became a successful welding shop owner.

The shift to Mayavaram only increased his concert engagements and soon Pillai was forced to “outsource” concert opportunities to other artists such as TN “Kakayi” Nataraja Sundaram Pillai, the nephew of TNR, the Vandikkara Street Brothers (Subramaniam and Mamundia sons of renowned nadhaswara maestro Ramayya Pillai) and Kuzhikarai Pichayappa Pillai.
